Thanks Harriette - Add some water to your sauce. It will thin it out and emulsify it. A little rice vinegar would also be a great addition. Works wonders.

And thanks to all you guys for leaving comments!

Wow. Seems like you touched a food chord, good work SJ! Yeah I could imagine that would totally food-suk if I got the gumption to get off my tush and head out only to be met with closed arms

But, really, I digress. I was signing on here hoping for a an "Ask SJ Food Tips" as the other night I was making some simple rice noodles with cilantro, scallions and warmed avocado-->MY FAVE (warmed avocado, YUM) and I decided I would make a sesame/almond paste/sauce. It was oh so heavy with just the two ingredients (almond butter and toasted sesame oil) and I knew--just knew--you might have a 2 second tip on how to lighten --and perfect--it, other than just add water!

I will await my "Ask SJ" corner and meanwhile, I send LA well-wishes for ACCURATE WEBSITES!

my gosh... your comments sound so very familiar. in fact, i wrote a recent review on yelp that echoes many of your concerns/issues with Umami Burger... what a great deal of potential this place has that i fear will be wasted b/c of terrible. i mean, just awful front of house/customer service...

Once, Amanda and I went (for the first time) and they had run out of food (!). Out. of. food. BUT, they said they would re-open at 5pm. It was about 4:30, so we decided to wander around the area until then. Sure enough, when we returned at 5, they said it wouldn't open until 5:30. We left.

In related news, I don't feel I missed much. When we finally "experienced" Umami a month or two later, we found it to be...meh. Fries were too steak-fry like (always a recipe for disaster). And the burgers were just too MUCH. It was like eating a meat-flavored patty of butter. Forgive me, but, a cheeseburger is one of those foods where less tends to be more. So long, Umami.
